Cancer risks in African-American women linked to talc use

A new study has discovered a link between talc use and ovarian cancer in African-American women. Researchers found that women who used talcum powder on their genitals were at a 40 percent higher risk of developing ovarian cancer than those who did not use the product. Even women who used non-genital powder saw an increased risk of developing cancer.

Investigators say that African-American and Hispanic women in particular are targeted by talcum powder makers. A 2015 study found that 44 percent of African-American women in the Los Angeles area used the product, versus 30 percent of Caucasian women.

Another study recently found that women who regularly used talcum powder on their genitals, sanitary napkins, underwear and tampons were 33 percent more likely to develop ovarian cancer than their peers who did not use the powder in such ways.

Unfortunately, African-American women are often underrepresented in many health studies. This particular research, conducted by scientists at University of Virginia, focused primarily on African-American women and their use of talc. Previous studies have linked talc use and ovarian cancer, but this most recent research confirms that African-American women should be especially cognizant of the risks.

An estimated 14,500 women die from ovarian cancer each year. Doctors first noticed a connection between talc use and ovarian cancer in the early 1980s and have been calling for warning labels on baby and talcum powder ever since.

Though less common today, many women of previous generations used talc regularly as a hygiene product. If you or someone you love has used talcum powder and developed ovarian cancer, consider reaching out to an attorney today.
